• Individuals over 16 years of age
• Portuguese nationality or of a member country of the European Union
• Physical and mental ability
• Appropriate professional training
• Basic training in maritime safety and awareness for the protection of ships.

The maritime registration is requested from a Local Authority of the Maritime Authority (Capitany of the Harbour) which, after verifying the applicable legal requirements, issues a Seaman´s Book with respective professional category for seafarers.

The seafarers shall comply with the requirements of applicable national and international legislation, including training, professional certification and medical fitness.
