Surveys must be requested in order to obtain certification of the vessel's safety and seaworthiness and can be initial, periodic, for the purposes of maritime tourism and extraordinary.
Type 1, 2 and 3 recreational boat inspections are carried out by the DGRM:
- Initial: carried out prior to registration and certifies that the RE complies with all applicable safety and seaworthiness rules and that it contains all the mandatory equipment, and technical information is issued.
- Periodic: intended to check the safety conditions of the RE, as well as the minimum mandatory equipment, and consists of a dry and on-water inspection, under terms to be set by order of the Director General of the DGRM. The periodic inspection is compulsory for all REs from the date of their first registration, with the following frequency:
- Every 10 years for REs in general;
- Every five years for REs longer than 24 metres and for vessels with a wooden hull longer than 12 metres;
- Every five years for REs more than 20 years old from the date of first registration.
- In the event of a change in the main characteristics of the RE or the navigation zone which implies a change in the technical characteristics of the RE and when the RE is not intended to be placed on the market.
Extraordinary:
REs are subject to extraordinary inspections:
- By order of a judicial authority;
- By order of the director-general of the DGRM:
- When there is substantiated knowledge of facts that may jeopardise the safety of navigation or to prevent the contamination of marine and water resources, namely upon the occurrence of a maritime accident;
- ii) At the proposal of the AMN, within the scope of its supervisory powers;
- iii) At the proposal of the entities with competence in the areas of jurisdiction and supervision of water resources.
Maritime tourist activity (AMT):
TYPE 1, 2 and 3 REs starting or already carrying out the activity must request an annual inspection for the purposes of carrying out AMT.
Foreign REs wishing to operate in recreational boating areas 1, 2 and 3 that are starting their activity in Portugal or are already doing so, must request an annual inspection for the purposes of exercising AMT. Foreign REs wishing to practise AMT must comply with the same requirements applicable to national vessels.
The owner of the vessel or their legal representative.

Go to the menu Create request, ‘personal area’ or ‘my organisation’, and select the Request Category ‘Vessels “ and the Request Type ”Surveys’ .
2. Fill in the required data.
3. Attach the documents in the appropriate fields.
4. Check the information and submit your application.

For each journey made by the technician:
Initial:
- ER with length < 12 m is 268,20€
- ER with length >=12<24 m is 405,20€
- ER with length >=24 m 542,10
Periodic:
- ER with length < 12 m is 268,20€
- ER length >=12<24 m is 405,20€
- ER with length >=24 m 542,10 €
Extraordinary:
- For all lengths is €405.20
AMT:
- ER with length < 12 m is 188,50€
- ER with length >=12<24 m is 285,40€
- ER with length >=24 m is 399,60€
