NAFO is an intergovernmental organization, founded in 1979, successor to ICNAF (International Commission for the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries - 1949-1978). Its objective is to promote the sustainable exploitation of fishing resources in the respective regulatory area (FAO 21 area). Currently counts with 13 members (Canada, Cuba, Denmark, EU, France, Iceland, Japan, Norway, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Ukraine, United Kingdom and United States of America). The Portuguese long distant bottom trawl fleet operates in NAFO. A limited number of national vessels is engaged in the capture of demersal species such as cod, greenland halibut, redfish, amongst other demersal species. All fish caught in NAFO is subject to mandatory inspection procedures when vessels arrive at port to land, along with stringent surveillance and control routines to follow the activity of these vessels in this area.

Fishing gears

Mesh sizes of trawl nets:

  • 40 mm for Northern prawn (Pandalus borealis)
  • 60 mm for short-finned squid (Illex illecebrosus)
  • 280 mm in the cod-end and 220 mm in all other parts of the trawl for skates (Rajidae)
  • 130 mm in directed fishing for other demersal species
  • 100 mm for pelagic redfish (Sebastes mentella) in Subarea 2 and Divisions 1F and 3K
  • 90 mm for redfish fishing (RED) with pelagic trawls in Divisions 3O and 3M and 3LN.

The provisions relating to the NAFO Observer Program are set forth in Chapter V of the NAFO Measures (see legislation below). The presence of observers on board fishing vessels engaged in fishing operations in NAFO is mandatory for the whole duration of the fishing trip.
