 Description

The Agreement on the International Dolphin Conservation Program (AIDCP), is a legally binding multilateral agreement that entered into force on February 15, 1999, succeeding the Agreement on Dolphin Conservation of 1992 (the "La Jolla Agreement"). IATTC provides the Secretariat for the program, which covers the Eastern Pacific Ocean. By Council Decision 2005/938/EC the former European Community (EU) approved the Agreement on the International Dolphin Conservation Program (IDCP) and must therefore apply the provisions laid down in this agreement.

The AIDCP aims to eliminate dolphin mortality in the tuna purse-seine fishery, by setting annual mortality limits that will ensure the long-term sustainability of the tuna fishery as a way to ensure the ecological conservation of other species, including dolphins.

The operation of the AIDCP is governed by the Agreement and its annexes, as well as by decisions taken by the Parties, which are reflected in the adopted resolutions, procedures, and guidelines.

States and Regional Economic Integration Organizations bound by the AIDCP:

  1. States and Regional Economic Integration Organizations which have ratified or acceded to the Agreement: Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, European Union, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, United States, Venezuela.
  2. States which are applying the Agreement provisionally: Bolivia, Vanuatu.
