How to change the technical characteristics and register the transfer of ownership of a recreational craft

Whenever you want to make a change to the registration of your recreational craft that involves one of the following options:

1. Changing the technical characteristics of the boat, such as:

  • Vessel name;
  • Hull colour / Superstructure;
  • Navigation zone;
  • Capacity;
  • Motorisation (replacement, attachment or detachment of engine);
  • Switch to recreational activity.

The future owner (buyer) or their legal representative, in cases that include transfer of ownership in addition to other changes.
The owner of the vessel or their legal representative, in all other cases.

Submitting the application online:

1. Register and authenticate yourself at www.bmar.pt

Go to the Create request menu, ‘personal area’ or ‘my organisation’, and select the Request Category ‘Vessels’ and the Request Type ‘Recreational Vessel - Alteration of technical characteristics and ownership’.

2. Fill in the required data.

3. Attach the documents in the appropriate fields.

4. Check the information and submit your application.

If you are the holder's representative, you must complete the Declaration - M-DQAI-34(3).

If you are the representative of an organisation, you must fill in the declaration of establishment of representative - M-DQAI-33(2).

 

For all applications:

  • Copy of the licence or equivalent document showing ownership.
  • In addition, you must attach the following documents according to the changes you want:
  •  

Transfer of Ownership:

  • Proof of acquisition or ownership.
  •  

Change of Navigation Zone or Capacity:

The capacity or area of the navigation zone must be within the limits indicated, namely in one of the following documents that you must attach to the application:

  • EU declaration of conformity of the vessel under Directive 2013/53/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 November 2013, or;
  • Manufacturer's certificate, or;
  • Type-approval certificate, or;
  • Builder's plate, or
  • Booklet containing evidence that you have previously had what you want registered.

Engine Change (Includes replacement, attachment and detachment):

The attachment or installation of an engine must be within the limits indicated in one of the following documents that you must attach to the application:

  • EU declaration of conformity of the engine,
  • Proof of purchase of the engine, indicating the make, model, power and serial number;

and in addition, one of the following:

  • EU declaration of conformity of the vessel under Directive 2013/53/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 November 2013, or;
  • Manufacturer's certificate, or;
  • Type-approval certificate, or;
  • Builder's plate, or
  • Document showing that you have previously had what you want registered.

Note: If you do not have any evidence that the boat is prepared for the requested increase in power, for the required capacity or desired navigation zone, you must submit a request to modify the boat. Changes in engine type from outboard to inboard and vice versa are considered modifications to the vessel.

  • Modification Licence: €41.90, where applicable
  • Name assignment: €41, in applicable cases.
  • Radio consignment (all types of vessel): €47.40, where applicable.
  • In the case of a change of registration for ER type 1, 2 or 3, the cost of the Technical Information for the change of registration is added (€57.10) and if the change requires verification, the cost of the Survey is added according to the length and activity of the ER.

Any costs for changing the registration with the Local Maritime Authority are added.
