How to register a recreational craft for the first time

Whenever you want to register

  • New vessels;
  • Vessels registered under other flags (imports);
  • Vessels registered in inland waters (ARH TEJO);
  • Vessels from the ABN (Former Naval Brigade).

The future owner (buyer) or their legal representative.

Submitting the application online:

1. Register and authenticate yourself at www.bmar.pt

Go to the Create application menu, ‘personal area’ or ‘my organisation’, and select the Application Category ‘Vessels’ and the Application Type ‘First recreational craft registration’.

2. Fill in the required data.

3. Attach the documents in the appropriate fields.

4. Check the information and submit your application.

If you are the holder's representative, you must complete the Declaration - M-DQAI-34(3).

If you are the representative of an organisation, you must fill in the declaration of establishment of representative - M-DQAI-33(2).

Type 4 or 5 recreational craft:

  • Proof of ownership (examples: purchase contract; discharge document; purchase invoice or equivalent document).
  • EU declaration of conformity or
  • Manufacturer's certificate or type-approval certificate (if the vessel is not covered by any directive);

Type 1, 2 or 3 recreational craft:

  • Demonstration of ownership (examples: purchase contract; discharge document; purchase invoice or equivalent document)
  • EU declaration of conformity or
  • Manufacturer's certificate or type-approval certificate (if the vessel is not covered by any directive). In this situation we add:
  • Catalogue or 3 photographs in different planes;
  • Copy of the part of the boat's manual that contains its characteristics.

Other documents may be added to those listed above in the following cases:

Vessel from a foreign country or registered in inland waters

  • Declaration of Cancellation of Registration, within 6 months (not compulsory);
  • If coming from a third country by its owner, a customs declaration proving customs clearance (not compulsory).

Vessel with used engine (engine that has already been used in another vessel)

  • Certificate proving that the engine has been detached from the previous vessel (mandatory);
  • Document proving purchase (compulsory).

Boat with a new outboard engine

  • Engine certificate of conformity (not compulsory);

You may be asked for other information when your application is being analysed.

Type 4 or 5 pleasure craft

  • Technical information for registration: 41,90€.
  • Assignment of name: €41.
  • Radio consignment (all types of vessel): €47.40, where applicable.

In the case of a change of registration for a Type 1, 2 or 3 ER, the cost of the Technical Information for the change of registration is added (57.10€) and if the registration requires verification, the cost of the Survey is added according to the length and activity of the ER.
