Framework

The monitoring and stabilization of cliffs in port areas, under the responsibility of DGRM, assumes some expression in small ports of central Portugal. In fact, the area south of S. Martinho do Porto to Cape Espichel is rocky and cliff-like, with small existing ports built in coves encircled by more or less important cliffs, and like all cliffs, unstable and evolving.

The case of the cliffs of the Port of S. Martinho do Porto and the cliffs of the Port of Ericeira assumes significant importance, both by its size and by the risk associated with it. Regarding the former, they are characterized as cliffs that exhibit some signs of instability, and studies have already been carried out to identify the instability mechanism, intrinsically associated with geological and geotechnical characteristics present.

The DGRM plans to develop, in a first phase, the implementation project involving the definition and design of adequate stabilization solutions, and in a second phase, the execution of the stabilization works.

The cliffs of the port of Ericeira, vertical cliffs and with constructions in great part of its top, were recent target of interventions in the zone to the north of the rooting of the breakwater, upstream overlooking the fisherman's beach, and on the south ramp.

The intervention or stabilization work in the northern top included, after a risk analysis and zoning of the above by sections of risk, the application of concrete designed in the most friable layers, preloading of unstable blocks, but still able to stabilize, disassembly of blocks whose stabilization was not feasible, and the execution of a beam anchored inside the rocky mass to support the foundations of the building on top of the top.
