Today we celebrate World Fisheries Day, a date that highlights the importance of sustainable fishing and the conservation of our marine resources. In Portugal, fishing is more than an economic activity; it is a tradition that defines our culture and sustains many coastal communities.
Portugal has a long history linked to the sea. With the largest Exclusive Economic Zone in Europe, our country is the leader in per capita fish consumption, with around 59 kg per person annually. Fishing not only provides an essential source of food, it also creates jobs and strengthens the local economy.
DGRM plays an important role in the management and regulation of fishing activities in Portugal. DGRM ensures the sustainability of marine resources by promoting responsible fishing practices and ensuring compliance with national and international standards. Furthermore, DGRM is responsible for monitoring and controlling fishing activities, contributing to the preservation of marine ecosystems and the protection of species.
Today, we highlight the importance of consuming fish for our health and express our gratitude to everyone who braves the sea, ensuring that we never lack this food.
