The 2024 theme "Investing in women: Accelerating progress" highlights the importance of gender equality, the empowerment of women and girls, and their rights to healthier lives.
Although progress has been made in recent decades in the EU, gender-based violence and stereotypes continue to exist. Women are still victims of physical and/or sexual violence, earn around 16% less than men and represent a low percentage (8%) of CEO positions in large companies.
In this context, the European Commission launched the Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025. The Strategy calls for "a Europe in which women and men, girls and boys, in all their diversity, are equal and free to follow the life path of their choice, have the same opportunities to realize their potential and can participate in and lead our European society on equal terms."
