At the Council of Ministers for Agriculture and Fisheries (Agrifish), which took place on December 10-11, 2023, in Brussels, Portugal secured increased fishing opportunities for monkfish, hake, megrim, black scabbardfish and horse mackerel, among others, as shown in the table below.
The quota increases for the following species stand out:
- Hake (+12%)
Portuguese quota increases from 4,645 tons (2023) to 5,096 tons (2024) - Monkfish (+7%)
Portuguese share increases from 689 tons (2023) to 739 tons (2024) - Areeiro (+11%)
Portuguese share increases from 96 tons (2023) to 107 tons (2024) - Black scabbard fish (+9%)
Portuguese quota increases from 2,106 tons (2023) to 2,300 tons (2024) - Horse mackerel (+5%)
Portuguese quota increases from 117,126 tons (2023) to 123,295 tons (2024)
In the context of negotiations with Norway, there was an increase in the quota of 212 tons of cod, 9% more than in 2023, with the quota now standing at 2,533 tons.
For Raia Curva, in addition to maintaining the 15 tons of quota for Portugal, it was possible to secure a commercial scientific quota of 50 tons for this stock, making a total of 65 tons/year.
Portugal also presented a proposal at the Council to extend compensation for the increase in production costs resulting from the current geopolitical instability. This proposal was welcomed by the majority of member states and the Commission's response is now awaited.
