DGRM participated in the Workshop “Coast Guard functions in support of the European Green Deal” organised jointly with the European Coast Guard Functions Forum (ECGFF) under its current Belgian chairmanship, in cooperation with European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) and European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), which took place on 18th - 19th of April, at European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) in Lisbon.
On behalf of the DGRM, Ana Teresa Cardoso, Environmental Engineer of the Environmental Monitoring Unit and advisor for the Maritime Administration Department, took part, who presented “Emission Control Areas as a tool of the European Green Deal”. The presentation focused on the ongoing process, coordinated by Portugal, for the designation of an Emissions Control Area (ECA) in the North East Atlantic Ocean (AtlECA), for emissions of Sulphur oxides (SOx), Particulate Matter (PM) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), which will link the existing ECAs in the Baltic Sea, North Sea and English Channel with the recently adopted Mediterranean Sea SOx ECA. The AtlECA will constitute a fundamental step in tackling air pollution caused by international maritime transport.
