DGRM participated in the 79^th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which took place from 12 to 16 December 2022, in the city of London.

Portugal was represented by the DGRM, through the Director of Maritime Administration Services and Deputy Permanent Representative of Portugal at the International Maritime Organization, Engineer Paulo Pamplona, by Engineer Alexandra Dias and Engineer Ana Teresa Cardoso, and by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through Dr. Carlos Sequeira, from the Portuguese embassy in London.

At this meeting, the most important topic was the designation of the Mediterranean Sea, as a whole, as an Emission Control Area for Sulphur Oxides (SOx) and Particulate Matter (PM).

The meeting resulted in a set of decisions aimed at responding to current challenges and continuing to contribute globally for the maritime transport decarbonizing and to the protection of the marine environment.
