On May 24, 2022, on the beach in California, with entry into the Sesimbra Submarine Cable Station, the mooring of the Equiano submarine telecommunications cable was completed, allowing to connect South Africa and other countries on the West African coast to Portugal. , with an approximate length of 15,000 km, of which 610 km in the mainland EEZ sub-area and 769 km in the Madeira sub-area.
The Title for Private Use of Maritime Space was issued by the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Security and Maritime Services (DGRM), in compliance with national maritime spatial planning rules, and its holder is the Google LLC company, Blue Path Technology Unlimited Company.
In Portugal, the company MEO - Serviços de Comunicações e Multimédia, S.A., contracted by Blue Path Technology, is the owner and manager of the Sesimbra Submarine Cable Station.
Businesses and consumers will benefit from Equiano cable's high capacity to carry different electronic communications services, such as remote work applications, high definition TV broadcast (HD TV), internet services, video conferencing, advanced multimedia and video apps for mobile devices.
In the aforementioned work of mooring the Equiano submarine cable, the ship “Ile de Sein” was in operation.
With the installation and operation of the Equiano cable, Portugal reinforces the Atlantic and transcontinental centrality of communications through submarine cables.
