Decree-Law No. 40/2021 was published on 1 June, ensuring the implementation in Portuguese law of the conditions of access to the regime reserved by the Revised Convention for Rhine Navigation for vessels which can navigate on the Rhine River.
The Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM) is the competent authority for issuing certificates proving that the vessel belongs to the navigation of the Rhine, under the terms and for the purposes of Articles 2 and 5 of the Regulation implementing the provisions of the third paragraph of Article 2 of the Revised Convention for Rhine Navigation.
In this way, vessels flying the Portuguese flag and fulfilling the requirements of the Convention for Rhine Navigation may become certified for navigation on Europe's largest waterway, which is of great economic importance for Central Europe.
With a length of 1,320 km, the River Rhine rises in the Swiss Alps, crosses Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands, passing through important cities such as Basel in Switzerland, Strasbourg in France, Bonn and Cologne in Germany, and flows into Rotterdam on the North Sea.
