Today was published the Ordinance n.º 38/2021, which creates a carbon tax for sea and air travel, to counterbalance the emission of polluting gases and other negative environmental effects caused by these means of transport.

The carbon tax is applicable to passenger ships, as defined under the terms of Decree-Law no. 93/2020, which dock at terminals located in mainland Portugal and has a cost of 2 (two) euros per passenger, in transit, disembarkation or embarkation.
